100 Holes In A Day
We’re always eager to highlight friends and organizations making their corner of the world a better place.
Through our friends at The Friars Club, we recently connected with one of their members taking on an interesting challenge in an effort to make golf available and affordable for America’s kids.
We recently sat down with Clem Venable, a Greensboro, NC based software consultant, to find out about his adventure in the 100 Hole Hike event to benefit Youth on Course.
On September 19, Venable teamed up with the Virginia State Golf Association to compete in the 100 Hole Hike at The Schoolhouse Nine in Virginia.
The 100 Hole Hike is a mashup of a marathon and a golf tournament, with players testing their own physical limits while raising money for Youth On Course.
And here’s the kicker: it’s all on foot.
Meet
Clem Venable
If there’s anyone built for the challenge of walking 100 holes of golf in a day, it’s Clem Venable. After all, he’s young, fit, and extremely passionate about golf.
A member at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC (home of the Wyndham Championship), he’s a 4-handicap.
Clem got connected to the event by our friends at the Virginia State Golf Association and The Friars Club.
HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR WALKING 100 HOLES OF GOLF?
“When I signed up, I knew I could walk 100 holes of golf in a day. But as I talked to more people, they’re like, “Are you sure you can do 100? That’s a lot of golf in one day.” so that added a little bit of reservation.”
“I’m a pretty avid Peloton rider and I like to workout, so I was excited about the physical challenge of it.”
WHAT WAS YOUR GAME PLAN FOR THE DAY?
“The key for me was getting off to a fast start and getting through the first 54 comfortably. After that, it was time to dig in and push through.”
“The experience was incredible. It was intimidating to start, but quickly became fun as I was able to meet some really cool people and engage in some fun, interesting dialogue along the way. I got off to a fast start and that really helped as the day got longer.”
HOW WAS THE GOLF COURSE?
“Schoolhouse Nine was the perfect course for the task. It’s pretty cool how fun a short course can be. Every hole had a ton of character and every green complex was special. I played 100 and would absolutely go back to play another handful.”
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO COMPLETE THE CHALLENGE?
It took a little over 6 hours! We were moving pretty good out there!
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER YOU CROSSED THE FINISH LINE?
“I thought about not looking at my clubs for a while. And then I thought about getting some carbs.”
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE CONSIDERING PARTICIPATING IN THE 100 HOLE HIKE?
I’d say do it! It’s for a great cause and is truly an experience you won’t forget. It can be done, and it will be fun. My advice would be to get off to a fast start because things will undoubtedly slow down as the day progresses.
